Woman airlifted after colliding with tractor trailer in Miami

Department: Miami Dade Fire Department - [Miami, Florida]

On Wednesday, March 05, at 8:00 a.m., MDFR responded to a head on vehicle collision on Krome Avenue and Southwest 120th Street. MDFR units arrived within minutes and found a mangled SUV and a tractor trailer which had collided with each other. Firefighters quickly assessed the scene and discovered a female in her 30s, heavily entrapped in the wreckage. The crash was so severe that fire crews had to utilize the "Jaws of Life" to extricate the woman, who was transported via Air Rescue to the trauma center. A large saddle tank on the side of the tractor trailer ruptured and spilled several gallons of diesel fuel on the road as a result of the collision. The driver of the trailer was not injured. MDFR Hazardous Materials units were called in to assist in containing the fuel leak. No other injuries were reported. A total of 11 MDFR units and 30 firefighters took 25 minutes to extricate the injured female driver. The cause of the crash is unknown and is currently under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol.
