Fla. firefighters injured at crash scene

Department: Miami-Dade County - [N/A, Florida]

On Saturday, March 08, at 3:30 a.m., MDFR responded to a vehicle collision on I-95 and Ives Dairy Road. MDFR units from the Aventura Fire Station arrived within minutes and found a single car which had collided with a highway sign post. Fire crews assessed the scene and attended to the injured driver of the vehicle, who suffered extensive traumatic injuries. As paramedics attempted to stabilize the patient in the rear of the rescue unit, a car traveling at a high rate of speed lost control and collided with the MDFR unit. Unfortunately, three firefighters inside the rescue suffered non life threatening injuries. The man from the original crash and the male diver of the second vehicle were both transported to the trauma center via Air Rescue. The injured firefighters were transported to local hospitals for evaluation. No other injuries were reported. MDFR reminds drivers about the “Move Over Act” which was signed by Governor Jeb Bush on May 1, 2002 to protect law enforcement and other emergency workers on our highways. The law states that on highways with two or more lanes traveling in the direction of the emergency vehicle, and except when otherwise directed by a law enforcement officer, drivers approaching any emergency vehicle parked on a roadway with their emergency lights activated, are required to vacate the lane closest to the emergency vehicle, as soon as it is safe to do so. When approaching emergency vehicles parked on a two-lane roadway, drivers are required to slow to a speed of 20 miles per hour less than the posted speed limit when the posted speed limit is 25 miles per hour or greater. The cause of the collision is unknown and is currently under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol.
