BOSTON — Former Littleton firefighter Christopher Mailloux said it was his first day back to work after his mother died in the spring of 2004 when fellow firefighter Steele McCurdy, the fire chief's son, suggested they go for a ride.

The pair took the town ambulance and drove to CVS, where McCurdy bought two notebooks, Mailloux testified.

Back at the fire station, Mailloux and Steele went into Fire Chief Alex McCurdy's office. It was there, Mailloux testified, that he was told by the chief he'd have to spy on a fellow firefighter.

In U.S. District Court, Mailloux testified, "I was told by the chief to document everything (senior firefighter) Keith Dunn said and did."
In testimony yesterday, McCurdy denied there were any notebooks but acknowledged he asked Mailloux to write down things about Dunn.

Mailloux testified that McCurdy wanted to dig up dirt on Dunn so that he could be fired and the chief's son could reap the financial rewards of being the senior man in the department.
