Northport (N.Y.) Fire Department: Moose Boats

PETALUMA, CA.- Moose Boats, an aluminum boat manufacturer, recently delivered a M2-33 outboard fire/rescue boat to the Northport Fire Department (NFD) located on Long Island in New York. This vessel is a 33'-6" all aluminum catamaran powered by twin 250hp 4-stroke Yamaha outboards, which can attain a top speed of over 37 knots, cruise at approximately 28 knots. NFD's boat is designed as a class "C" fireboat and also operates as a certified NY State Ambulance.

NFD selected a catamaran hull as it provides a stable platform for dive and rescue/recovery operations as well as for critical patient care. In addition to the boat's fire-fighting and water rescue applications, it is outfitted as a water-borne ambulance with advanced life support capabilities. The large cockpit and stern pulpit provide tactical space for rescue operations with access to water emergencies via port and starboard side dive doors. Two full-size basket litters as well as an extensive amount of rescue gear are stored within each hull. Her interior layout has an 84" bench seat for patient care as well as extensive storage lockers for medical and fire-fighting supplies. The vessel is equipped with a 7kw generator which provides power for heating and air-conditioning in its all weather cabin. Ample power is also available for fixed and portable incident scene lighting for nighttime operations. Extensive communication and navigation gear as well as a night vision infrared camera is incorporated into its folding mast. The fire suppression system consists of a 500 GPM HALE pump, a 2-½" STANG monitor at the bow as well as hand line connections at the stern.

This is the first commercial outboard boat that Moose Boats has constructed since the company began in 2000. Moose Boats has constructed multiple water-jet vessels, of similar design, for the US NAVY and various law enforcement agencies nation-wide. Moose Boats have been chosen because of their fast and stable catamaran hull design coupled with powerful propulsion, which is well suited to meet mission requirements.
