Hundreds grieve for N.J. firefighter

By JIM WALSH
Courier-Post (New Jersey)

BURLINGTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. — An estimated 1,000 mourners, many of them firefighters, gathered here Thursday night to pay their respects to a fallen comrade.

The casket of firefighter Edward Marbet rests atop an antique fire truck following his funeral service Friday. Marbet was apparently able to lead his fiancee to safety through the front door, and his father, who had been in a basement area of the home, through a back door. The solemn procession moved slowly through a township firehouse, where a flag-draped coffin held the body of Edward Marbet, a 14-year volunteer firefighter.

"He was an excellent friend, an excellent firefighter," said Ken Erlenbusch of Eastampton, who had known Marbet, 31, since they met as junior firefighters 16 years ago. "He was the best person in the world."
