N.Y. State Senate passes law protecting more 9/11 first responders

NEW YORK — State lawmakers passed a bill Thursday to protect more city employees who may have been exposed to toxins at the World Trade Center site during the clean-up and recovery effort in the wake of the 9/11 terror attacks.

The State Senate passed an amendment to a law that would offer accidental death benefits to both retired city employees who came back to work on 9/11 and correctional officers who helped in the disaster response.

Employees must have worked at the World Trade Center or other areas used in the operation between September 11, 2001 and September 12, 2002.
