Drunken N.Y. firefighter accidentally shoots companion in fire hall

The Associated Press

CLAY, N.Y. — A firefighter was shot and wounded by a drunken companion at an upstate New York fire station, police said.

Tyler Drake, 21, of Alexandria Bay, was shot in the right arm just before 7 p.m. Sunday inside the Moyers Corner Fire Station, said Sgt. John D'Eredita, a spokesman for the Onondaga County Sheriff's Office. Drake was taken to University Hospital in nearby Syracuse. His injuries were not life-threatening, D'Eredita said.

Stanley Memmelaar, 26, of Moyers Corner was charged with first-degree reckless endangerment, second-degree assault and driving while intoxicated, D'Eredita said.

Memmelaar was handling his .45-caliber handgun recklessly when it discharged, D'Eredita said. Memmelaar had a valid pistol license, he said.
