10 rescued from N.Y. fire escape

By Erin Calabrese
The New York Post

NEW YORK — Firefighters yesterday rescued 10 people, including three kids, who'd fled a four-alarm blaze in Harlem but got trapped on a fire escape.

There were two minor injuries to firefighters after the blaze at 169 W. 113th St., which erupted at 4:15 p.m.

"I was feeling scared," said 9-year-old Tamara Burks, who lives on the fourth floor with her mom, Kishia, and godmother, Tradina Dow.

"I kind of started to cry, but my mom told me to stop and keep calm."

About 20 families escaped as choking smoke billowed throughout the building and flames shot from the windows.

But 10 residents got stuck on the fire escape on the second landing, where a ladder to the ground failed. Firefighters brought in their own ladder.

"I was scared like crazy, but I was like, 'God is with us' [and firefighters] guided us down," Kishia Burks said.
