POMPANO BEACH, Fla. — A firefighter was taken to the hospital Monday after a fire hydrant "blew out of the ground" and struck him while he was helping fight a blaze, a Pompano Beach Fire-Rescue spokeswoman said.
Driver/engineer Edwin Adams, who was treated at Imperial Medical Center and released, suffered minor injuries in the incident in the 300 block of Southeast Ninth Avenue, spokeswoman Sandra King said.
Nobody else was injured in the fire, but it damaged four apartments, displacing six adults and four children.
Officials will investigate why the hydrant erupted from the ground, "to make sure it doesn't happen again," King said.
