On-duty Chicago firefighter shot

CHICAGO — Authorities say an on-duty Chicago Firefighter was shot and seriously wounded while investigating a small fire in a South Side alley.

Chicago Police Officer Laura Kubiak says the shooting occurred about 4:40 a.m. Sunday in the 2900 block of E. 80th Place.

The firefighter's name wasn't immediately released, but he is an 18-year veteran of the department who is in his 40s.The officer was reported in serious, but stable, condition after surgery at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

Fire Commissioner Raymond Orozco says it wasn't immediately known whether the firefighter was the intended target of the shooter.
