Dear FireRescue1 Member:

Fire departments across the country are preparing for fire prevention week, which begins Sunday. Do you have a plan in place to educate your community about the importance of preparedness in case of danger? Are you working to educate department members on education techniques? Let us and the rest of the FireRescue1 community know what you're up to at the 2007 Fire Prevention Week thread at FireRescue1 Forums.

Also, visit the NFPA's Fire Prevention Week section for the fire service for more information on how to successfully plan and implement your Prevention Week activities.

Fire Prevention Week:
What you can do
The Butcher's Bill
The Safest Fire

Throughout the nation next week, departments will be reaching out to their communities to spread the fire prevention message in a variety of ways, including open houses and school visits.

Fire Prevention Week represents the fire service's best opportunity of the year to drive home the safety message to communities.

While there is certainly positive impact from these efforts, the true challenge is keeping the momentum going for the rest of the year ... Full Story

With Fire Prevention Week approaching, I encourage everyone to take the time to go to the NIOSH website to review the latest firefighter fatality investigation reports. As you look at the deaths outlined, issues such as a lack of continued training and poor command and communications will all be things that contributed to the deaths of these fine individuals.

FireRescue1 Tip
Follow the rules
It seems some departments think they have a better idea than those passed down by the NFPA. The NFPA spends a great deal of time and money determining what is safe and what is not.

I think, based on the number of firefighter deaths that occur each year, that it is time to get on board with the national safety standards that are established ... Full Tip

"I have been a firefighter in New York state for many, many years. Each year I get into a mini battle with the agency that gives us our physicals and fit tests. Because I have a goatee, which is trimmed, they won't even allow me to take the fit test, let alone see if it works. I have worn different types of masks and ALL fit with no leakage."
