Dear FireRescue1 Member,

The wait is nearly over — in just seven days, applications to the Assistance to Firefighters Grants can begin.

According to FEMA's AFG web site, this year's application period will run from 8 a.m. ET, Monday, March 3, through 5 p.m. ET, Friday, April 4.

With its imminent arrival, there may seem little reason to even begin thinking about next year's program yet. But President Bush's proposed budget for Federal Fiscal Year 2009 would see huge reductions in AFG funding.

Check out Grant Fundamentals columnist William Fletcher's take on the planned cuts below — and what you can do to try to stop them. And visit FireGrantsHelp.com for more info on AFG, as well as helpful information and resources for putting together successful grant applications.

The sooner we realize that we all have the same problems, the sooner we can find true solutions. We may be in different physical locations, but just as fire is the same everywhere, managing a professional volunteer department is the same, too. One way to identify and share our difficulties is to develop a member exchange program.
