Twice as many firefighters are injured performing fireground duties as there are fire injuries to civilians, according to a new report.

Career firefighters aged between 35-39 working to extinguish residential structure fires are the most likely group to suffer fire-related injuries.

There are many articles devoted to safety — including what you're reading now. And although they can set the pace, it is up to firefighters and officers to meet that pace. The interaction among crew, officers and chief sets a tone for the agency and its attempts at establishing a culture of safety. Although many will verbalize their desires for safety, there are many more ways for an officer to communicate it beyond conversation.
