At the Charleston Fire Department, crews try on state-of-the-art air packs and test heat-seeking cameras. Firefighters train on larger diameter hoses and inspect a newly arrived fire engine.

It wasn't always this way. For years, many Charleston firefighters scoffed at the modern tools and safety-driven practices used by other area departments.
