The Atlanta Fire Department had little warning of the first tornado to hit the city's downtown in recorded history — eight minutes to be exact.

But the department acted quickly Friday when word came through from the weather service. Fire companies across the city were radioed to sound their sirens to warn residents of the approaching danger.

In just a few years, thermal imaging cameras have become essential tools for the fire service. But despite the tremendous benefits they offer, there is an issue that can prevent departments from using TICs to their fullest potential: a lack of standardization in the tools, meaning one TIC can have completely different operating functions from another.
