Thousands of people lined the streets while firefighters and family members marched in the funeral procession today for two suburban firefighters who died while battling a house fire last week.

Firefighters from numerous departments joined in saluting the procession to a funeral Mass for Colerain Township Capt. Robin Broxterman, 37, and firefighter Brian Schira, 29, at St. Peter In Chains Cathedral.

I completely agree. More pats on the shoulder might help reunite some with the joy of simply helping others. In one of the best feel-good calls that I remember, we arrived at a possible structure and found an older woman whose heater had set off the smoke alarms. The woman and her daughter kept apologizing for the false alarm. Some of the guys viewed it as an easy $20 (we are volunteers paid per call) but I walked away knowing that the two women apologizing over and over were just saying "thank you." Getting paid is just icing on the cake.

I was just curious, as my boyfriend and I are looking ahead and contemplating jobs as paid firefighters, what the average salaries are in various cities. I know that it's not the most lucrative of jobs, but what do firefighters get paid in your cities? Do you know of any cities that are preferable salary-wise or for other reason? Any favorite cities?
