A congressional panel wants to know why a plan to create a nationwide emergency communications network failed to attract interest in a spectrum auction.

The recently completed auction of a portion of the public airwaves, while raising a record $19.1 billion, failed to attract a bidder to build the network.

Disasters like Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, revealed limitations of emergency communications, like the inability of police and firefighters to communicate with one another ... Full Story

Prevention Matters
Holding the Public Accountable – What a Novel Thought!
What if we actually start holding people accountable for their actions as they relate to fires? While this way of thinking might make some in the fire service queasy, I would suggest that as people were charged and fined, and the media started reporting it, we would gradually start seeing reductions in fire death and injury. It could maybe lead to a cultural change in our communities and country.

I have known of and even seen a couple of close calls first-hand. Most of them were stupid mistakes. Guys and gals, it is a matter of slowing down to speed up. Confused? Like rapid dress, if you get going too fast, you are likely to either miss something or mess it up.

FireRescue1 Forum Post of the Week
I am trying to pull together a Mass Casualty Incident training. My department provides fire protection for an entire county with volunteers only. I want to pull everyone from the county (fire, law enforcement, EMS, hospital staff, and air ambulance) together to run through some class room time and a mock drill (a full Saturday). I need some good ideas to get everyone committed and in attendence. Our department has the funds to pull this off, but all I can come up with so far is making it free and providing food. I am very open to suggestions.
