Dear FireRescue1 Member,
In days gone by, listening to tales around the firehouse kitchen was probably the ultimate way of learning from the mistakes of others. But in the 21st century, there's a host of other resources out there, too.
This week, one of the finest examples — The National Fire Fighter Near-Miss Reporting System — launched its redesigned web site, courtesy of FireRescue1. The FireRescue1 team worked with the folks at Near Miss to bring a new look and feel and improved navigation to the revamped site, which features easier access to a number of key safety and training resources.
Check it out at FirefighterNearMiss.com.

Sammy Williams admits he has been overweight — 290 pounds at his heaviest.

"I've gained and lost the equivalent of six or seven grown men in my lifetime," the Dallas firefighter says.

Now weighing in at 230 pounds, he is a "reformed fat man," fellow firefighter Paul Walukas said.

Because Mr. Williams, 44, is feeling healthier, it didn't surprise him when he received a superior ranking in Dallas Fire-Rescue's new mandatory health screening, which started in March ... Full Story

Everyone Has a Role to Play in Safety
By Tom LaBelle, FireRescue1 Columnist — Sponsored by Globe and DuPont
I think that each of us often wonders what role we can play in firefighter safety. Clearly everyone can play a part in their own personal safety, and that's something we all should do. But what else is there? The truth is, there's a lot — and you don't have to arrive in a chief's car or sit in the officer's seat to make a difference.

The FireAde 2000 firefighting agent attacks a wide range of fires and even renders flammable liquids inert. Its cooling properties prevent re-ignition and it uses a positive charge to attract and lock up negative hydrocarbon molecules. This creates a cocoon of separation within the molecules of the flammable liquid, snuffing out the fire by making the liquid or other material incapable of burning.

FireRescue1 Forum Post of the Week
The establishment of a RIC/RIT/FAST Team is up to the discretion of the Incident Commander and is established when he/she feels it is necessary. On an aggressive fast interior attack of a "room and contents" fire you most likely won't have one. The fire will be knocked down before you can get enough resources in place to establish a team. On any extended interior operations I strongly encourage the rapid implementation of a well trained and properly equipped RIC Team. Nobody likes to sit outside and wait while others are inside "getting some", but somebody needs to do it.
