Dear FireRescue1 Member,

With more than 800 videos already uploaded, it's hard to believe FlashoverTV.com only launched at the start of the year. As the first dedicated online video community for firefighters, the site has exceeded even our own expectations, serving as a resource for both entertainment and training, and covering virtually every aspect of firefighting and the fire service.

This newsletter marks the launch of a unique new column focusing on near misses that have been "Caught on Camera." Jason Poremba, a New York firefighter who runs the leading firefighting video blog FirefighterSpot.com, will contribute a monthly column using actual fireground and incident scene footage to illustrate important safety lessons — and offer advice on how you can avoid similar scenarios.

Charleston Mayor Joe Riley has reversed his decision to withhold a highly anticipated report on the deadly June 18 Sofa Super Store fire. The document will be released May 15, he said Tuesday.

Last week, the mayor said he wanted to hold the report until two federal agencies completed their probes of the blaze.

But Riley said he changed his mind Monday after speaking with firefighters and learning of concerns voiced by families of the fallen. Both groups wanted the report released as soon as possible, he said ... Full Story

Problem: Your turnout gear is too hot and heavy for everyday rescue runs. Globe is the solution. Total Heat Loss (THL) measures the ability of materials to allow body heat and moisture to pass through the garment – the higher the THL number, the more breathable. Turnout gear has a minimum THL of 205 W/m2. Globe CONVERTIBLE™ has a minimum THL of 450 W/m2 for Rescue/Recovery and 600 W/m2 for Utility.

Scene Control at Motor Vehicle Accidents
Incident command is often left in a position at motor vehicle accidents to leave part of a road open. In theory this makes sense — clear the scene of a motor vehicle accident without disrupting normal flow of traffic. All seems fine on paper, but this mentality is destroying emergency vehicles, injuring rescue personal, and in some cases killing them.

Bread and Butter Basics
Orient, Observe, Decide, Act
Since my previous article, I have been to a number of significant incidents, including fires, rescues and some pretty major drills. After each incident or drill, I stop for a minute and give myself a personal critique before reviewing it. At each of these events, similar themes constantly emerge and I thought I would take some time here to explore some of them.

It is a tradition to fly the flag at half-staff when a member of public safety in the area dies and I believe it should be done regardless of directives issued or "proper" protocols. It is a sign of respect. I have been a firefighter for 11 years and was a police officer for 2 years prior, and I have never failed to ensure the flag is flown appropriately for my station or area.
