Dear FireRescue1 Member,

When you think of fire service legends, some names spring to mind instantly. But who are the up and coming leaders? Who will inspire the next generation of firefighters and follow in the footsteps of such figures such as Dunn and Brunacini?

In this newsletter, we're delighted to introduce a new column by Chief Billy Hayes, a man destined to play a huge role in the fire service nationally in the coming years.

He's been described to me as a true "mover and shaker" in the fire service, even one of the "future Brunacinis." In his new column, Chief Hayes will focus on the NFFF's 16 Firefighter Life Safety Initiatives and how you can use them to stay safe.

Check out his first offering below.

With EMS Week under way, it's a good time to reflect on your EMS operations. Firefighters are tackling 50 percent fewer fires than they were 30 years ago, but it's certainly not reflected in their workload.

EMS calls account for up to 80 percent of the total received by some departments.

These statistics demand a fresh approach to how fire departments handle EMS. And Dallas Fire-Rescue — whose calls are 60 percent EMS-related — is at the forefront of adopting a new approach ... Full Story

16 Ways to Stay Safe
Today, the fire service has a tremendous opportunity to make an impact on the business that we love, for the ones we love. I can't think of anything else more important. I have many roles in the fire service, but one of my most passionate is serving as the Region IV Advocate for the Everyone Goes Home campaign through the NFFF.

Ensuring Success in SAFER Grant Applications
Each year a new cycle starts for departments to apply for SAFER Grants — and each year I wonder why more departments do not apply. of the Week

So what happens now, everyone? Do we bad-mouth the final report, and comment on governmental meddling. Do we take cheap shots at the outgoing fire chief or on-scene officers? Or, do we learn from this? The best way to honor these firefighters is to learn from the mistakes that were made here, and do not repeat them. Don't let their loss be in vain.
