NIOSH: Wind a factor in Va. structure fire LODD

Excessive wind and weather should be taken into account in structural firefighting just as in wildland, according to a NIOSH fatality report.

Firefighter Kyle Wilson, 24, died in April last year. Fellow firefighters began a search for him after they lost contact, but withdrew when the structure began to collapse.
 According to the NIOSH report, Firefighter Wilson and his lieutenant were searching the master bedroom when strong winds caused the fire to shift unexpectedly ... Full Story

| Fireground Accountability – A 'System' to Keep Firefighters Safe

Fireground accountability is a system that is used to track the location of fire crews while operating in the hot zone on the emergency scene. All too often, the lack of an accountability system is listed as a contributing factor in NIOSH line-of-duty death reports. The Phoenix Fire Department uses a "passport" accountability system.

I previously talked about the importance of getting to the scene in one piece by driving safely — and sanely — and by making sure everyone uses seat belts. If you're doing that, then you're ahead of the curve. But that's only the start. Once you are on the scene, you need to stay safe while operating on a roadway, whether it be a six-lane interstate or a suburban street.
