Dear FireRescue1 Member,

The one-year anniversary today of the fire that killed nine Charleston firefighters means different things to different people. For many loved ones of the fallen brothers, it will herald the start of the true grieving process away from public scrutiny. For others, it is a time both for somber reflection and a celebration of the lives of the nine men. But there can be no greater way to commemorate the anniversary and honor the fallen than to learn from the tragedy of June 18, 2007 – and ensure it doesn't happen again.

The Legacy We Leave
By Tom LaBelleSponsored by Globe

A year ago this week, I dedicated my column to the Charleston 9, as they became known. Clearly they had no desire to die that fateful day, nor a desire to leave a legacy. But that's what has occurred — and we are left to wonder how we deal with the tragedy. Full Column
Reflections on 9 Firefighters
By Jay Lowry

When a large fire took the lives of nine firefighters, it was not business as usual. I have devoted my time to writing and studying the fire service. But it in no way prepared me for the shock of losing nine firefighters from a department I loved and served on. Full Column

Member Comment of the Week
A toast to the FDNY for being one agency that takes the abuse of fire code violations seriously. What message are they sending? Violate the fire code, don't correct it and you go to jail. My hat is off to whomever made the decision to take this action in New York. That took guts; something sadly missing in most fire department administrations in our great land these days.
