Saving homes and lives during Sandy
Dec. 28, 2012
Dear FireRescue1 Member,

It would be nice if a flip of the calendar page signaled a fresh beginning. But the problems of 2012 will still be the problems of 2013, as well as a few new ones we've not yet seen. The good news is that the fire service is resilient, courageous and intelligent. Firefighters will emerge from these troubled times smarter, better and stronger. That's just how we roll. As we close out 2012, please pause to remember the 83 firefighters who died in the line of duty and the numerous others who were injured. As you do, look at those around you — fellow firefighters, friends and family — and take stock in how precious this life is. Have a safe new year, appreciate those around you and remember those who are gone.

Editor's note: Looking back on 2012

A career is, or should be, a deeply personal thing. If you are going to devote most of your waking hours to a pursuit, you damned well better love it. This year my career shifted to allow me to return to the fire service. And I do love it. It gives me another chance to serve. And service to others is something we must focus on as we cope with the problems of this year and face the challenges of the coming year. Awesome responsibility
