With more than 340,000 square feet of exhibition space, fire service shows don't come any bigger than FDIC. But it wasn't just about the exhibits, of which there were hundreds.

Leading fire service figures held educational sessions and speeches, and the attendees that crammed into the rooms are hopefully already spreading the messages they heard.

It's impossible to pick one truly defining moment. But straight-talking Chief Rick Lasky, of Lewisville, Texas, captured the mood perfectly. "We exist to help people; that's our job," he said. "Their worst day is our best day. Isn't your best day making someone's bad one go away?"
