An SUV slammed into a pickup truck while driving through dense fog

By FireRescue1 Staff

TULARE COUNTY, Calif. — Two off-duty firefighters and a retired fire captain saved a 17-year-old boy and his elderly passenger over the weekend.

Off-duty firefighters Clay Lyons and Manuel Garcia and retired CalFire Capt. Sid Regehr were on the Sunday morning crash scene before Tulare County Fire firefighters responded, according to the Recorder.

A pickup truck was broadsided by an SUV due to heavy fog. Firefighter Lyons immediately called 911 while Firefighter Garcia tended to the victims.

The passengers of the pickup sustained minor injuries and were able to get out of the vehicle on their own. The two occupants of the SUV were found unconscious while a fire started to spread through the car.

Firefighter Lyons put on his gear and with the help of Firefighter Garcia, helped the passengers out of the vehicle as they started to regain consciousness.

Captain Regehr gave a fire extinguisher to the other firefighters to put out the flames that were creeping around the 17-year-old's legs. An ambulance arrived shortly after and transported the victims to the hospital.

The 17-year-old suffered third degree burns to as much as 50 percent of his body.
