COLUMBUS, Ohio — A 5-year-old boy died yesterday, three days after being pulled from an icy pond, and a Columbus fire battalion chief remains haunted by the knowledge that he was only 20 feet from rescuing him.
Elijah T. Walker was pronounced dead at 5:15 p.m. at Nationwide Children's Hospital, Columbus police said.

Mike WellockMonday, February 11, 2013 9:16:45 PMMany firefighters have been "that close" to saving a life, only to have conditions/circumstances change the outcome. You try....you give it your best shot. That's all that can be expected. Your family (professional and personal) understand this.
William EarnestTuesday, February 12, 2013 8:36:03 AMIt's has to be a terrible feeling.....my thanks and respect to all of you who serve the public so nobly.
Brian KruegerTuesday, February 12, 2013 9:39:15 AMThe one thing that always helps me understand the emotional part of the job is we did not cause it. We are simply doing our best to make the outcome better.
Jim McDanielTuesday, February 12, 2013 10:31:03 AMTo come that close to saving a boy and then have them slip away from you is a firefighter's worst nightmare. Chief, you did all that you could to try and save him. Sometimes despite our best efforts, the child was meant to be called home to GOD. Find comfort in the fact that he is now with GOD as part of a divine power.
