Mass. woman dies in fire despite one-minute response time

By Julie Tremmel
WWLP.com

WARE, Mass.— A fatal fire has some Ware residents checking to see if their friends are okay. It only took Ware Fire Fighters one minute to arrive on scene at 18 Park Avenue. The blaze broke out directly behind the fire station.

Despite the quick response, it took crews 45 minutes to access the second floor apartment where they discovered the body of a 60 year old woman.

Ware Fire Chief Thomas Coulombe explains why it took so long to get to that part of the five family structure. Chief Coulombe said, "Part of the floor on the second story is gone; it was gone when we made initial entry into it, so it was unsafe for us to go in with the normal door. They (crews) actually breached a wall to make access to the second story."
