Crews rescue 4 workers from Kansas City tunnel

The Associated Press

KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Fire crews rescued four construction workers Thursday after they became trapped in a flooded river tunnel.

Kevin Shirley, deputy chief of the fire department in Kansas City, Kan., said the men were working on a flood-control project, traveling through a tunnel that links Turkey Creek with the Kansas River, when their boat capsized.

Two of the men were able to climb onto dry land about 800 to 1,000 feet inside the tunnel and eventually walked out, he said. The other two were swept downstream but were wearing life preservers and were rescued by fire crews in boats, Shirley said.

The construction workers were treated for hypothermia and released, he said.

The 90-year-old, 1,275-foot tunnel had recently been restored.
