Firefighters rescue horse trapped in frozen pond

The firefighters used a lasso to drag the horse to land

By FireRescue1 Staff

ORRSTOWN, Penn. — Penn. firefighters rescued a horse who had fallen into a frozen pond Sunday.

A farmer in the largely Amish Orrstown called for help after his team of draft horses had wandered onto the lake, according to the Inquirer.

Volunteers were able to lure four of the five horses off the four-inch thick ice with food, but the fifth fell through, about 20 feet from shore, its hind end touching the bottom of the pond.

Firefighters used a lasso to tie it around the horse's head and were able to pull it out of the hole it had made and across the ice.

The horse was taken by the owner after the rescue to the veterinarian for a check-up. It was not immediately clear how the horse was doing.
