Station closed, firefighters laid off in Mass.

NORTON, Mass. — Fire Chief Richard Gomes announced at Thursday's selectmen meeting the Chartley fire station will be closed due to budget constraints.

Gomes also said five call firefighters would be laid off and one full-time position, open due to retirement, would go unfilled.

"Those are the expected impacts right now," said Gomes, cautioning, "This is the best case scenario."
