Develop SOPs for Highway Driving

Contributed by: Bob Vaccaro, FireRescue1 Columnist

The use of fire apparatus during highway operations creates one of the most hazardous situations a fire department is likely to face. Many firefighters have been killed or seriously injured while operating at accident or vehicle fire scenes.

Many departments have developed Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to deal with these types of incidents. Here are some examples:

Recommendations for Highway Operations:

  1. During highway operations, position the apparatus at a 45 degree angle to the lanes, with the pump panel facing the incident and the front wheels rotated away from the incident.
  2. Extinguish forward-facing emergency vehicle lighting, especially on divided roadways.
  3. Reduce the amount of emergency vehicle lighting as much as possible at the scene.
  4. Remain vigilant at all times during the operation.
  5. Require members to wear highly reflective vests or turnouts when working at these types of operations.
  6. Equip your apparatus with red and white reflective chevron striping in the rear of the vehicles.
  7. Work with your neighboring mutual aid companies to develop similar policies.
  8. Review and change policies to meet your individual needs.
