Keep sand on hand in icy conditions

As temperatures continue to drop, it’s important to head out from the station prepared to deal with the elements. Here’s a basic cold weather apparatus tip that can prevent big headaches: Keep a couple of coffee cans (or comparably-sized containers) full of sand in each vehicle. During freezing temperatures, sprinkle the sand around and on the tires of the apparatus to prevent it from slipping on the ice.
