Preventing sprains and strains

Contributed by: FireRescue1 Staff

Sprains and strains are common injuries suffered by firefighters, and the rise in EMS-related calls makes you even more prone to them.

During the transport of patients, it's vital to place as much emphasis on teamwork as equipment, particularly when involved with overweight patients. Giving clear directions and commands helps to ensure that safe lifting and carrying is done in a coordinated manner.

In addition, before moving the patient, you should take into account the terrain, layout of the building and mobility of the patient themselves so you can prepare for any potential hazards.
