Crash kills off-duty firefighter, son

It is unclear why the victims' vehicle crossed the center lane and hit the pickup truck

ASHBY, Mass. — The Ashby community is mourning the tragic loss of a mother and her teenage son after they were killed in a two-car collision in Fitchburg Sunday morning.

Michelle Martens, 36, was a volunteer EMT and firefighter in Ashby, and came from a family of firefighters.

For reasons unknown, the car Martens was in crossed into oncoming traffic and hit a truck that was being driven by another Ashby firefighter. Martens and her son, Justin Fournier, were ejected from their vehicle after crashing head-on into the pickup truck.
