PORTERS LAKE, Nova Scotia — The blur of the fire engine raced by Toulany’s Market in Porters Lake, its flashing lights and echoing siren announcing a reply to a call for help.
But seconds later the rescuers became the emergency when they veered to avoid several oncoming cars on a narrow stretch of pavement near Highway 7 and West Porters Lake Road.
The fire truck’s squealing brakes reached Lisa Fraser’s ears at the nearby convenience store, moments before the truck flipped over in a ditch at about noon Saturday.
