Wis. volunteer firefighter killed in traffic accident

CAMBRIA, Wis. — A volunteer firefighter and former high school football star has died when his car collided with two semitrailer trucks on state Highway 33 in Columbia County.

Cambria Village President Tim Perry identifies the victim as 20-year-old Ryan Jones, who graduated from Cambria-Friesland High School in 2005. He was killed almost instantly in the crash that happened yesterday just after 2 p.m.

Sheriff Dennis Richards says volunteer EMTs and firefighters from Cambria were the first to respond to the scene. After realizing there was little they could do, they waited for backup responders from Pardeeville to arrive and take over recovery operations from the Cambria volunteers, who worked with Jones.

The sheriff says it's the worst nightmare for emergency personnel, to find an accident involves one of their fellow workers.

Drivers of the two trucks were not injured.
