Off-duty death of member hurts Fla. volunteer department

By FireRescue1 Staff

DeFUNIAK SPRINGS, Fla. — A 59-year-old firefighter died Wednesday after five years of volunteer service to her Fla. department.

Vicky Harvey, of the Liberty Fire District in DeFuniak Springs, died unexpectedly of a heart-attack while she was off-duty.

A full-time volunteer, Safety Officer Harvey was a core member of the department and will be sorely missed, according to Chief Tony Roy. "We even left a truck with a lot of medical gear at her house," he said.

"Her loss will really hurt our daytime response. She didn't get paid for her work, but she was always there."

Memorial arrangements have not yet been finalized.
