S.D. Forest Service collecting fire photos

The Associated Press

CUSTER, S.D. — The U.S. Forest Service is looking for photos taken of last summer's Alabaugh Fire that killed a homeowner, injured two firefighters and destroyed 33 homes in the southern Black Hills.

Spokesman Frank Carroll said still photos, digital photos or video footage are of interest.

They will be used to build a nationwide training program for other firefighters to avoid mistakes that were made on the Alabaugh Fire, Carroll said.

Two firefighters were burned while deploying a fire shelter during a burnout around a residential area. Both firefighters have recovered from their injuries.

The Forest Service is interested in all fire-related photos, such as smoke columns, weather, and fire in tree tops, Carroll said.
