BOWIE, Texas — A firefighter died Dec. 7 after collapsing while battling a house fire.

Times Record News reported that Bowie Rural Volunteer Fire Department firefighter Charles Patterson, who had been with the department since it began in 2007, was working a hose line in the front yard of the house Dec. 1 when he collapsed due to chest pains.

EMS providers immediately treated Patterson before transporting him to the hospital, where he later died.

“Charlie was our friend and brother who we will miss dearly,” Chief Randall Preuninger said. "He was a good fireman and a major asset to our department from taking care of communications to helping take care of our fundraiser. Charlie will be greatly missed, gone, but not forgotten."

Patterson is survived by his wife and daughter.
