SALT LAKE CITY — Two residential fires in Salt Lake City sent a woman to the hospital and caused about $80,000 damage early today.
The fires were about 15 minutes and half a mile apart. The first blaze was reported at 1:50 a.m. at a duplex in the 400 East block of Sego Avenue. Firefighters found flames coming from a front window and an unconscious, 47-year-old woman in the back of one residence, said fire department spokesman Dennis McKone.
The woman was not breathing and firefighters used CPR before rushing her to University Hospital, where she was in critical condition.
About 15 minutes later, firefighters received a report of a blaze near 600 South and 700 East. They found a wooden staircase on fire at a fourplex, McKone said. The fire was extinguished but two units received smoke damage and their occupants had to be relocated.
That fire is considered accidental, but the cause of the first blaze remains under investigation.
