LITTLETON, Colo. — A firefighter who died Saturday of a brain tumor was honored as he was escorted to donate organs.
CBS Denver reported that South Metro Fire Rescue firefighter Cody Mooney, 31, lost his battle with an aggressive brain tumor.
Dozens of firefighters, family members and hospital staff lined a corridor to pay tribute to Mooney as he was escorted to donate organs as a way to continue saving lives after his death.
"Cody was taken from this world too soon," South Metro Fire Rescue said in a tweet. "South Metro personnel are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Cody and will continue to support his family through this difficult time."
Mooney was diagnosed with cancer in 2017 and recently had his first surgery. He began experiencing complications a few days into his recovery.
"The amount of people we've seen coming through the hospital is a testament to his character and who he was," firefighter Sam Phelps said.
Mooney’s father, Kevin, said he “was the kind of guy, where if you showed up, he was your friend from the moment you met him.”
Mooney leaves behind four children, and his wife is expecting their fifth child in a few weeks.
