Firefighter reaches high to lift young ICU patient’s spirits

After hearing that the young patient likes firefighters, Oscar Barrera arranged for a firefighter to gear up and climb to the fourth floor of the hospital to say hello

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A young ICU patient’s spirits were lifted by a firefighter who surprised him in a unique way.

CBS Sacramento reported that after retired firefighter Oscar Barrera heard that a young Northern California Shriners Hospital patient liked firefighters, he arranged a visit.

The patient, who had been in the ICU for many weeks, was on the fourth floor of the hospital, so a firefighter dressed in full gear and used a ladder truck to rise to the patient’s window to say hello.

Barrerra said the surprise was a “feel good” moment for the firefighters, which stays with them and helps them as they respond to emergencies.
