Coronavirus (COVID-19)

The CDC is closely monitoring an outbreak caused by a new coronavirus strain first identified in Wuhan, China in December 2019. The World Health Organization announced an official name for the disease on Feb. 11, 2020: COVID-19. 

The first case in the United States was announced on Jan. 21, 2020, in the state of Washington.

The WHO declared the novel coronavirus outbreak a global health emergency on Jan. 30, 2020, and declared it a pandemic in March.

The first fatality in the United States was announced on Feb. 28, 2020 – the same day that more than two dozen firefighters were quarantined following possible exposure at a care facility.
