BUFFALO, N.Y. — A firefighter made a trek across the country via bicycle to honor fallen first responders.
WBFO reported that Buffalo Fire Lieutenant Jason Czora started his journey with 90 pounds of bike gear in tow on Aug. 17 at the Fallen Firefighters’ Memorial in Colorado Springs. He finished on Sept. 11 at the Buffalo firehouse in New York – 1,565 miles from where he started.
"I'd much rather be running into burning buildings than do this bike trip anytime soon,” Lt. Czora said.
Lt. Czora raised at least $13,000 for the Stephen Siller Foundation, a group that helps firefighters, police and wounded veterans.
"We've had firefighters, Chris Dill in particular, who was killed in Iraq. Service members, they allow us to do what we do on a daily basis and to know that service members that have gone to serve for us and to come home disabled, to know that they are being taken care of is as important," Lt. Czora said.
As Lt. Czora rolled into the firehouse finish line with a police escort, fire vehicles featured names of Buffalo firefighters killed in the line of duty.
Lt. Czora said one widow’s reaction to the Siller Foundation’s help particularly moved him.
"She was very emotional. Her husband just been killed, two days prior, and they were telling her that she's got kids that she has to support and she's just lost this income, but she's never going to have another mortgage payment because they're paying off her mortgage," he said. "They had the papers right in front of her and it's paid off right here. Boom. Done."
In addition to paying off mortgages, the Siller Foundation has built over 30 smart homes for disabled veterans.
