COFFEYVILLE, Kan. — A fire lieutenant died Sunday in a vehicle crash.

KWCH reported that Coffeyville Fire Department Lt. Derek Messner, a 15-year fire veteran, died after being involved in a two-vehicle crash.

Messner’s colleagues responded to the crash and nothing could prepare them for it.

“This is hitting our department hard,” Fire Chief Bob Roesky said. “We train for traffic incidents, but no training prepares you to respond to a wreck for one of your own. We appreciate the department’s chaplains for the time they spent with us on Sunday to help us through this.”

The crash also killed another person, Garry Bush.

Our hearts are heavy today at the City of Coffeyville and particularly in the fire department by the loss of firefighter...
