THORNWOOD, N.Y.— Volunteer firefighter Sean Carroll, 26, died early Thanksgiving morning after a blaze started in the basement of his home in Thornwood, CBS New York reported.

He had been asleep in the basement.

Thornwood Fire Chief James Gedris was working when the call arrived, and he recognized the address, News 12 reported.

Firefighters from the department responded to the call and were able to rescue two of Carroll’s family members.

Carroll was remembered as bright and friendly. He worked in public safety like his father and his brother. Carroll’s father is a police sergeant in Rye Brook.

The Rye Brook Police Benevolent Association created a fundraiser to help Carroll’s survivors. It has already surpassed its goal of $100,000.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
