ONSET, Mass. — A firefighter battled a blaze at the same church in which he was supposed to get married hours later.
MassLive reported that Onset Fire Department firefighter Conrad Fernandes received a mutual-aid call about a fire at the 78-year-old Saint Patrick Church.
Fernandes’ fiancé Daliza also called him about the fire, as they were supposed to get married inside of the church later that day.
The church sustained half a million dollars in damages, and the couple was forced to find another location to have the ceremony.
Fernandes and his groomsmen set to finding another church as soon as the sun came up, and the wedding still took place.
The bride and groom said the wedding was beautiful thanks to family and friends who helped out at the last minute.
“Maybe in 10 years, maybe even tomorrow, I’ll laugh about it, but I am still in shock,” Fernandes said.
“First thing he (Fernandes) said was, ‘It doesn’t matter, we’re getting married tomorrow, we'll find anywhere. You’ll be Mrs. Fernandes tomorrow.’”
