Nearly half of Mich. dept. laid off
12 of the 27 firefighters will be out of job by noon Monday
DETROIT — Nearly half of a Michigan department's firefighters will be laid off Monday in an effort to cut city costs.
44 percent, or 12 of the 27 Hamtramck Firefighters Local 750 station, will be laid off, according to a department release.
Among those being let go are the department's chief and fire marshal.
The layoffs were supposed to occur in September, but the city held off until possibly receiving a federal $1.25 million two-year grant, according to the Detroit Free Press.
Although Hamtramck did take the grant, the firefighters union voted against the concessions presented with it. The city has not received further notification of the grant.
Layoffs take effect at noon Monday.
