NORTH COURTLAND, Ala. — A volunteer fire chief died of a heart attack while being transported by ambulance to the hospital.
North Courtland Volunteer Fire Department Chief Eddie Harris, 47, was at the scene of a burn training exercise when he complained of not feeling well. He was taken home, and later that day sent to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
“The guy was the most dedicated firefighter we had,” former Mayor Ronald Jones told DecaturDaily.com. “He put everybody else before himself. He wanted to be the first on the scene to put out the fire. The fire department will really miss his presence. He kept things going and taught the other guys the correct way to do things.”
Chief Harris was with the fire department for 30 years and became fire chief three months ago.
