Spotlight: Providing critical communications is the foundation of Codan Communications' business

The company creates critical communication solutions that stay loyal to their heritage of reliability, dependability and longevity

Company name: Codan Communications
Headquarters: Victoria, British Columbia
Signature Product: MT-4E series

1. Where did your company name originate from?
We began as a company called Daniels Electronics. Daniels was founded in 1938 by F. Gordon Daniels, a radio communications officer for the British Columbia Provincial Police in the Prince Rupert region.

Many years later, in 2012, Daniels Electronics was purchased by an Australian company called Codan Ltd. and then rebranded to the name Codan Communications, which is what we operate under today.

2. What was the inspiration behind starting your company?
During his time with the police, Daniels helped establish the northern regional radio network and helped construct its radio systems in the Prince Rupert region. Prince Rupert is a small fishing town along the northern coast of British Columbia, Canada.

The business started with Daniels personally hand-building radiotelephones for lease within the fishing industry. During World War II, the business was put on hold. And, following the war, Daniels re-established the commercial business.

Daniels Electronics was officially incorporated Dec. 9, 1950. Throughout the 1950s, Daniels continued to produce AM radiotelephones in Prince Rupert. During the mid-1950s, the founder moved his family and the company's office to Victoria. Following the passing of the founder in 1962, his two sons, Terry and Ron, established a growing manufacturing and marketing operation in two old buildings near the company's current location until it was sold to Codan in 2012.

3. What is your signature product and how does it work?
Our signature product would have to be the MT-4E series. It was our flagship repeater and quickly made us renowned for products with incredible longevity and for low power solutions fit for harsh environments. Beyond our signature product, we are proud to provide non-proprietary, standards-based, interoperable communication infrastructure.

4. Why do you believe your products are essential to the first responder community?
Communication is critical when it comes to saving lives. In order for first responders to help people and each other, having reliable communication is key to getting the work done in the safest way possible for everyone involved.

5. What has been the biggest challenge your company has faced?
Being around since 1938, we have seen the tail end of the depression, a world war and now a pandemic. All of these times bring challenges to us as a society and as individuals. However, one thing is for certain: what helps us get through any challenge is communications. Providing critical communications is the foundation of Codan’s business and, just as we’ve been here the last 80 years, we’ll be here for at least 80 more.

6. What makes your company unique?
We create critical communication solutions that stay loyal to our heritage of reliability, dependability and longevity. Our success is achieved through a commitment to quality across our processes, portfolio and most importantly – people.

7. What do your customers like best about you and your products?
Our products' longevity and field serviceability have always been stand-out features of our products and they are the benefits we most often hear customers compliment us on.

8. What is the most rewarding part of serving the first responder community?
The importance of the first responder's role in society cannot be understated. We have all relied on them to help a loved one or perhaps even ourselves. How can we help but feel connected to those who serve us so selflessly?

9. Do you support any charitable organizations within public safety or your community? Tell us more.
Our team regularly does work to raise funds for our local community through a charity called the Mustard Seed. This past year, we supported their Fair Start campaign, which provides school supplies and lunches to children in need. Most recently, we drafted a Codan Cookbook with staff recipes and sold them with 100% of the profits going to the Mustard Seed for the holidays. Pre-COVID, we engaged in a Chili Cook Off with all proceeds going to the Australian Fire Relief. We know the value and importance of charity work and make a concentrated effort to give back in different ways throughout the year.

10. Is there any fun fact or trivia that you'd like to share about you or your company?
Years ago, when we still manufactured marine radios, Daniels decided to diversify its business. They bid on and then won a contract to manufacture a made-to-order mountaintop radio repeater system for the British Columbia Department of Highways. This was the first iteration of our MT-4E series that is still going strong today.

11. What's next for your company? Any upcoming new projects or initiatives?
There will be a go-to market initiative for our upcoming software release for Cascade. This should be releasing summer 2021, so stay tuned for more information leading up to then! Outside of this software release, Codan is on a journey right now to become a customer-collaborator of intelligent lifesaving networks serving those that serve us.
